ပြင်သစ်ဘာသာစကားက Romance Language ဖြစ်ပြီး Latin ဘာသာမှဆင်းသက်လာပါတယ်။ ယနေ့ခေတ် ကမ္ဘာပေါ်တွင်ပြင်သစ်ဘာသာစကားပြောဆိုသူ သန်းပေါင်း ၃၂၀ ကျော်ရှိပြီး နိုင်ငံပေါင်း ၂၉ နိုင်ငံတွင် ပြင်သစ်ဘာသာကို Official Language အဖြစ်သတ်မှတ်ထားရှိပါတယ်။ထို့အပြင် ကမ္ဘာ့ကုလသမ္ဂ ( United Nations - UN ) တွင်လည်း Official Language အနေနဲ့ အသုံးပြုလျက်ရှိပါတယ်။ ပြင်သစ်ဘာသာစကားပြောဆိုသူများကို " Francophone "လို့ခေါ်ကြပါတယ်။ ပြင်သစ်ဘာသာစကားကိုတတ်မြောက်ခြင်းအားဖြင့် အလုပ်အကိုင်အခွင့်အလမ်းများပိုမိုတိုးပွားလာနိုင်သလိုမိမိရဲ့နယ်ပယ်ကို ချဲ့ထွင်နိုင်မှာဘဲဖြစ်ပါတယ်။
